El Saltillo, one of the three largest suspension bridges in Spain in natural spaces that is already known as the other Caminito del Rey, has opened to the public this Monday and represents one of the main landmarks of the Gran Senda, a circular route of 745 kilometers that runs through the best of the province of Malaga.

This project, carried out by the Diputación de Málaga, has required an investment of 600,000 euros for the construction of the bridge, which measures 50 meters long and 1.20 meters wide and is located 50 meters high in a gorge that unites the municipalities of Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella.

The president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, has assured that the completion of this bridge is "a dream" and that the Gran Senda is "boosting inland tourism" and added that this segment is "booming" as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and that "we must take advantage of it" with the creation of these green tourism projects.

He highlighted the collaboration of the administrations to achieve this "new tourist resource", he welcomed this "good news" at a "so difficult" time and reminded hikers that the route must be carried out in a "responsible and prudent".

With this route through the bridge, built with steel and wood, the scenic value and spectacular nature of the El Saltillo area is accentuated, which surrounds the Almanchares river and which has as a backdrop the peaks of the Sierra de Tejeda Natural Park , Almijara and Alhama.

The Minister of the Presidency, Public Administration and Interior of the Junta de Andalucía, Elías Bendodo, has affirmed that tourism "must be" one of the "engines" of Andalusia, that this project will "promote employment" and will " taking advantage of the resources of the environment "and that it will be" a benchmark "for the Axarquía region and the autonomous community.

Metal walkways located more than a hundred meters away have been arranged and adapted for a safe walk and new trails have been prepared, since -until now- in the final part of the route there were different sections of the route that had to be carried out along the shoulder of road.

The mayor of Canillas de Aceituno, Vicente Campos, has indicated that it is an important day for the entire Axarquía, that this project is "magnificent" to attract tourism and that this is an example that the Provincial Council "supports" the towns of the inside.

The route to El Saltillo begins in the central square of Canillas de Aceituno and has a total length of 8 kilometers, round trip, and allows you to enjoy spectacular views of the surroundings.

Due to the steep landscape, a helicopter and a zip line have been used for the construction of the bridge that has allowed the materials to be moved from one side of the gorge to the other, as well as mules or “quads” to transport what is necessary.

Almost two million people travel each year some of the stages of the Great Path, which cross 60 municipalities of the province, four natural parks, two natural reserves and three natural landscapes, at the same time that it joins the Mozarabic Way of Santiago (GR-245).
